Attorney General Steve Carter Commends New Cabinet Appointments

Work with Ken Salazar and Tom Vilsack makes Carter optimistic about President-elect's choices

(Indianapolis, IN) – Indiana Attorney General Steve Carter stated his support for two recent appointments to the cabinet by President-elect Obama. During his tenure as Indiana Attorney General, Carter has worked with Colorado Senator Ken Salazar, selected as Secretary of the Interior and Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack, the president-elect’s choice for Secretary of Agriculture.

“Secretary-designate Ken Salazar brings strong credentials to a post that requires the balancing of preservation and development interests. When he was state attorney general, he worked well with his colleagues across ideological and political spectrums,” noted Carter. “He was held in high regard by states’ chief legal officers.”

Carter and Salazar served together as state attorneys general for four years prior to Salazar’s election to the United States Senate in November 2004.

“Agriculture is an area where Iowa and Indiana have much in common. Secretary-designate Vilsack’s executive credentials are accompanied by a Midwestern perspective that is similar to that of Hoosiers,” said Carter. “The secretary-designate will bring an understanding of how developing technology is transforming the infrastructure of America.”

Vilsack and Carter served together on the State Alliance for E-Health, an initiative of the National Governors Association.  The alliance has addressed the development and implementation of electronic health records to reduce costs and improve patient care. Created in 2007 and led by governors Bredesen of Tennessee and Douglas of Vermont, the State Alliance for E-Health includes two former governors and two state attorneys general.
